You may have heard talk around the use of parabens and phthalates in the products that we consume, especially from other natural and eco-friendly companies. If you're not sure what they are or what they do, we've done the research for you and listed it all below. Are parabens and phthalates bad? What are the effects of parabens and phthalates? Are parabens and phthalates used in candles? Read on to find out.
What Are Parabens?
Parabens are preservatives that are present in lots of things from makeup to food. They're used to prevent mold and bacteria growing and to protect us from infection. They usually go by different names which tend to end in paraben such as ethylparaben and propylparaben.
So What Do They Do?
Parabens have been around since the 50's. In 2004 a study was published by Dr. Philippa Darbre which found traces of parabens in the breast tumors of 19 out of 20 women who participated in the study. This doesn't necessarily mean that parabens cause cancer or are linked to it, but it did show that parabens do make their way into our skin from other products.
Since this study, more research has been undertaken to find out whether or not parabens are linked to cancer and just how dangerous they can be.
There's been lots of investigation from large organisations, such as BreastCancer.org, who note that "Parabens can penetrate the skin and act like a very weak estrogen in the body -- potentially turning on the growth of hormone-receptor-positive breast cancers."
Despite this research, The Cosmetic, Toiletries and Perfumery Association released a statement in response, stating that "Parabens are officially approved for use under the Cosmestics Direction (76/768/EEC), the European legislation that regulates all cosmetics and toiletries. We can reassure the public that all cosmetic and toiletry products containing parabens may continue to be used safely."
There are still lots of doubts surrounding the use of parabens, especially as they have been banned by other countries such as Denmark, however the jury is still out on their use and whether or not they are dangerous.
What About Phthalates?
Phthalates are used in nail polishes, hair sprays and other products including cleaning product fragrances. Not only are they known to cause birth defects and fertility problems, but they also mimic hormones and disrupt their natural process which raises concerns around increased cancer risk, similar to parabens.
Are Parabens & Phthalates Used in Your Candles?
In short, we do not use parabens or phthalates in any of our products. Some fragrance oils used in other candles, wax melts and diffusers can contain parabens and/or phthalates. These are sometimes used by less reputable companies, which is why it's important to check for these details when purchasing home fragrance products.
Each fragrance oil from our suppliers comes with an SDS sheet (safety data sheet) which shows us its ingredients and all warnings from allergies to fertility issues which are caused by parabens and phthalates. Whenever we are testing and researching new fragrances, we always check through these sheets and work with our suppliers to ensure that parabens and phthalates are not present in any of our fragrances.
As well as our fragrances, we can also confirm that our rapeseed and coconut wax does not contain any parabens or phthalates.
